In November 2023 I qualified as a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), following five years of training and studying. The RICS qualification is a global benchmark within the industry for integrity and professionalism. The lengthy and rigorous pathway to becoming a member of the RICS highlights the highest professional standards and competence across the sector.
What is the RICS?
The RICS is a leading professional body within the built environment working in the public interest. Founded in 1868, the professional body set standards for over 130,000 members globally with a distinct focus on maintaining trust and confidence within the profession, advancing the highest ethical and technical standards across land, property and the built environment and to provide expert, impartial advice to governments, business and the general public.
Why Choose a RICS Member?
Using a RICS member comes with reassurance. Prior to qualification, the assessment of professional competence is undertaken, ensuring the high standards of professionalism are met prior to becoming a Chartered Survey. The process involves a two-year structured learning programme, where competencies are developed. The competencies declared are scrutinised by a panel of assessors in an interview, ensuring the candidate meets the strict requirements of the profession.
In an industry that faces little regulation, knowing that RICS members are independently regulated by a Standards and Regulation board helps provide confidence for clients. Compulsory ethical standards including, honesty, integrity and competence, enforce that the regulated members act in the interest of the public and provide a high-quality service, whilst being fully insured.
Journey to Qualification
I originally joined MMP in 2018 following a part-time role with the firm. I began a part-time university course through The University College of Estate Management, increasing my knowledge of the industry, valuation, and compliance. By benefitting from studying whilst in a relevant role, I was able to relate my learning to examples within the industry, furthering my knowledge. Following the conclusion of my degree, I embarked on the 24-month structured training programme with the RICS. Maintaining a diary for over 24 months, I attended valuations, surveys, market appraisals and development sites with my colleagues, developing my professional competence within the industry. The application process concluded with a rigorous interview and presentation on my declared competence from fellow RICS members, ensuring I understood the requirements of the RICS and met the high-level of competence required by the organisation. I am pleased to have passed the assessment of professional competence in November, qualifying as a RICS member and look forward to providing professional work for clients, throughout Mid Wales and Shropshire.
